The cycle of chronic nightmares is awful. The only thing that has helped me with them is a medication called "prazosin." It's like a miracle drug.
Are you seeing anyone? Therapy or otherwise..? Unfortunately our brain must process heavy trauma consciously or unconsciously.. And that can happen in sleep and can manifest in nightmares.
Prazosin is a blood pressure med. I use it when I'm in a heavy "cycle" of nightmares when I'm sleeping for an hour, waking up in a panic, or avoiding bed all together because the experience of nightmare induced panic attacks is much worse than sleeplessness. I stop taking it after a little while because my blood pressure runs low, anyways that the physiological side effects of syncope and lightheadedness can be a bit much - but it always helps initially to break the cycle. Usually when it hits the month or 2 mark of chronic nightmares and severe lack of sleep I call the doctor, therapist, whoever.
Do you see anyone or want to? I would encourage you to seek help if you don't.
