That is very very weird, some Spanish is definitely better than no Spanish at all. Are you sure you don't qualify for intermediate? If you can communicate with people it sounds pretty good already.
Regarding chatting - I personally found it very useful when I was learning English. I dare to say it accounted for 70% of my learning success back then.
