I volunteer at a hospital dementia ward. I just go in once a week and help patients colour, read to them, or even just hold their hand. It gets me out with people, gives me a sense of contributing, and a sense of satisfaction.
I attend and moderate a weekly support group. Again I feel both a sense of contributing, satisfaction, and validation in myself. In addition there is an opportunity to socialize before and after which has become a very important part of my week.
I have few aquaintances but make entertaining for coffee each week important.
Even writing letters to distant relatives and friends I find helpful. Connections and keeping in touch are also important to me.
I make a weekly visit to the library. Even if I don't talk to anyone I feel part of something.
And finally, when I'm feeling particularly down or lonely I take advantage of drop in programs at my local mental health centre. Things like art, walking, yoga, etc. I don't have to socialize or comunicate but again feel apart of something.
Hope these ideas help.
