I was just doing a quick search on robotics just to see how advanced it really is at the moment, and it turns out my knowledge on the subject was (admittedly) a bit outdated.

Robots that will clean your house are already available, also there are robot kits that allow you to build a rather rudimentary robotic device and program it yourself.

And maybe sooner than you think, you might get your wish coming true: there is this company that specializes in building companion robots.

There might be even more companies out there building robots for the general public, if you search for them. Things are more advanced than I thought.
