d.o.a., feeling in danger and being in danger are two very different things. It took me a long time to learn the difference because I'd learned they were the same.

The example that helped me sort out the difference was imagine you are sitting in a room and start feeling afraid. If you look around and there is nothing dangerous happening you are safe. You can then using coping skills to lower your fear. (I use positive self-talk - eg. "You are safe." "There is nothing here to harm you."
If someone just came in the room with a gun and is threatening people you are in physical danger. It's time to take action to protect yourself.
