No, you don't need to ask permission at all. If you get the job, you can just tell him you've landed a job on the same floor as his office. You can also give him a heads up that you'll acknowledge him with a hello if you happen to run into each other (or not, if you'd rather ignore him). It's no different than any other outside contact--your rules apply, not his.
