There were times I'd incorporate latin percussion instruments into my kits. A vibra slap can be amazing when used judiciously in place of a crash.
I'm amazed that people have trouble with piano. If you don't aspire to be a concert pianist it's so easy because it's linear. You could say guitar is linear but if you look at it that way it's 6 linear instruments plus the hammer ons and pull offs and string bending. The only instrument I ever got paid to play was drums but on the other hand nobody paid me not to play the other instruments The emotions of certain instruments always fascinated me. On drums I felt raw power. On guitar, recorder, and piano I felt accomplishment and eloquence. On Kalimba I felt... something odd. Peace maybe... and discovery.
