It might be helpful if you create some distance from her for a while, seeing her while you still feel like this would be a painful reminder. In time you'll find it easier to talk to her without going gooey.
It sounds to me like you've made big progress over reaching out to people since you retired, this is relatively new stuff to you, you're bound to make mistakes sometimes - the trick is to learn as we go.
