Most of my horrific doctor experiences happened in the emergency department. It was always the same doctor, the one with the expressionless face. He had no tolerance towards people with mental illness. I was often a victim of his frustration. Now, I won't to go to emergency, unless I am dying or have suffered a major injury such as a fracture.
The worst hospital I ever "served time in" was the local children's hospital. The staff were cruel in that place. They used threats to get patients to cooperate. Image being threatened with an admission to a provincial psychiatric hospital at the age of 16. As far as I am concerned that was very inappropriate.
When I diagnosed with personality disorder, it was very heard to be heard. I developed psychosis about 5 years after that diagnosis. When the illness was in the early stage I ended up in the emergency department. The psychiatrist accused me of lying about my symptoms and told me it was just my personality. About 4 months later I was very ill and in need of treatment. At that point it was very obvious my illness was a lot more than a disordered personality.
So many clinicians are very judgmental towards personality disorder. They assume legitimate medical concerns are malingering or due to factitious disorder.
