Alcohol may help you get to sleep but it will reduce the quality of your sleep. You made a good choice by getting to sleep earlier. I am guessing to get more hours of sleep. A bit of anxiety or hypomania can result in waking during the night, fully alert. Don't go too long with nights of interrupted sleep before you get something to see you through the night.
