I think some of that comes from background. I was in the clean your plate over eat family where too much was cooked and served in the first place. I remember the first time I visited a family that cooked reasonable amounts for each person. I had never seen one good size piece of chicken per person but platters full with lots of seconds. I didn't even know it was possible to eat that way and I was in high school. My tendency is still to prepare much food and eat too much.
