One kid did 2 years and another is considering doing a year. It would get you out of the house and give you some tuition credit when you complete the year. They pay, but not generously. You might even be able to work in something related to the field you want to get into.

Direct quote from my then 19 year old son after he'd started at his Americorp post helping people avoid homelessness "Thank you for making me finish high school. I guess you guys were right about a bunch of stuff." First 19 year old in history to admit that parents know something.
