I think your dream is your fear that somehow he's changed during his time away... kind of a last minute ploy by your mind to scare you. Now that you know he's back and you've connected, the dream recalls the abandonment and finds a way to bring it back up.

I have so many bus dreams like that. I wonder if it's a not-uncommon theme?
