i'm no expert but I don't think it is a precursor to later developing diabetes - but instead of worrying about things that are beyond your control, you should focus on the things that you can control to prevent getting diabetes - having a healthy diet, and exercising, I think you are right to be concerned about developing diabetes given the family history.

One of the most common reasons for an otherwise healthy person to become hypoglycemic is from drugs - commonly alcohol
There is also an extensive list of rather rare causes.

Does your dr intend on investigating the cause of your hypoglycemia?
