I completely think, very loosely interpreted, you are right.
Less loosely: I don't think it is an implant, but just our brains having to much material to work with (as in cells), becoming lazy.
Thinking it is an implant can be dangerous (really wanting it out, doing anything), not so much in your possible/posited view of reality, but is, like any delusion, almost correct. It is just us losing control of that greater use of potential (rather than capacity, which is shown to be less) and thinking others consciously do this, while it is just our lazy brain. Almost, but I think no cigar.

Mania kills cells. Brain cells die. Memories become more reduced conceptually, making more efficient use of limited means. Memories shape our reality. Our memories are more or less split in two by abstractions, conceptual reductions. Mood states with memories, concepts, attached. Memories of pain and those of joy. It causes instability, changeability. Fearing that will leave an emptiness between pain and joy and a greater divide.
