Haven't you got the percentages mixed up!? What does count as mentally ill for you (or those doing the study)? I wouldn't say about half of those I come across that smoke are mentally ill (then again I would call 0% mentally ill of the general population).

I would say many are having anxiety issues due to caring too much.
