I know many say it's bad, but for me it was like a restart button. The pressure was gone, and I became much better at managing my money since I only use cash now. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it. And it's not the end of the world. I was able to get a new car like three years later (the car I had was still good and didn't need another one) and buy a house four years later. Just maintain what credit that wasn't removed (i.e. student loans, car), or start small with an unsecured card if you really need to build back up your credit (I'm talking like $200 small).
However, medical bills are another situation. Those you have no choice in the matter. When you need help, you need help. But that help can cost thousands of dollars. It's like you finally find relief and feel better, but then that bill comes in the mail a few weeks later and it's like FML! And the stress begins again...
I really didn't intend to ramble on for this long. The point I'm trying to get at is that there are options. Some hospitals have some type of financial counselor that can help you with payment options or a reduction in the bill, I'm not sure what it is, my sister has had something to help with medical bills too. Either way I hope you're able to figure it all out. Pm me if you need to vent about it.
Please take care.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I have a question that may help OP too... Is it true that when you file bankruptcy they garnish your wages to pay everything back? I've always thought that bankruptcy wiped all your debt clean without having to pay it all that minute but recently someone told me that isn't true? I ask because I've considered this route before too but at the moment I have no wages to garnish lol.
