Many, not all by any means, are so absorbed in their own "issues" they are blind to their childreds's problems.

Just wanted to say that sometimes it could be that the parents are in denial. Like it's not that they don't care, they could love their children deeply, but they don't want to see or accept that something could be wrong with them. It seems that mental illness is so much harder for many people to accept as compared to physical illness. I think this was the case with my parents, that they really loved me (and still do), but didn't want to face what was going on with my OCD and anxiety, and then, later, depression, until they were basically forced to.
I hate referring to any suicide attempt as a "cry for help," because that seems to imply that it's attention seeking rather than an expression of genuine pain and desperation. But that might be the case for these teens. Glad you were there to help them. As much as I wish I could do a job like yours, I know I couldn't handle it.
