You're compelled to tell your therapist things you normally wouldn't because you have the ear of someone who can help you.

As for being an "attention hog", I say to these people: What's wrong with needing attention? When we're hurting, we need attention to those injuries so they can heal, whether mental or physical. It's good to make sure we're telling the right people though; specifically your therapist, pdoc, loved ones, people here on PC... There are those out there that just don't care about anything but themselves, and they don't deserve your time.

Don't listen to them.
