This is what my counselor does too.
He wants the freedom to reply or not reply to an email (unless it's about scheduling of course). I'm completely fine with it, because I don't email him to get an immediate response from him - for me it's more about knowing someone is out there who will read it.
He has a zillion kids and wants to spend his time outside of work with his family - I think it's a good boundary for him to have.
