They would definitely want to do one if you are seeing a GI doctor. Upper and lower GI symptoms can be vague and not valid enough for a diagnosis of something or a clean bill of health.
Of course, you do not have to get scoped. Make sure you ask the doctor before to explain why s/he wants you to be scoped and go from there. If your insurance is paying or something similar, scope procedures of any sort are virtually harmless. But, I'm not sure how much the procedure would cost out of pocket.
