I guess it's a case of balance. Many friendships are more based around shared activities or interests, so if I start pulling in my horns and stop doing things, many people drop away.

That true. With my one friend we honestly didn't have many interests in common though which made it different. Even though we liked different things we could talk for hours on end about anything and never run out of things, but lately it almost seems like she doesn't want to talk to me. It really sucks because I'm a guy and I like having female friends because I think they can be more sensitive to hard issues and it's nice to have a girl's opinion on things. Idk I just hope things go back to how they were.
