I understand that this is a gift and a nice gesture that you hope to be a mutual interest, but I'm still not getting why you don't just ask her if she smokes, rather than bring in an item that she might hand back to you- whether she smokes or not. Sometimes gestures like this might be considered a coy aversion in place of direct communication.

Talk therapy requires talking for reasons. We have to learn to speak to our own stuff, affection, attrachment, curiosity, needs, demands etc. in order to get underneath the surface.

Simple questions are a part of that.
