I would insist that they remove the tooth, and from personal experience I think 2 teeth should be removed, one on each side, to give room for the new teeth to grow properly. I hope this isn't unhelpful but it sounds to me like they should have addressed this properly before and not fobbed off with "painkillers" sigh......
