As part of my package from work, I got the services of an outplacement agency for 5 months to help with my career search. I had my first meeting with them today. When they asked why I had been let go, I decided to be totally honest with them and explained that it was because I had had a really bad drinking problem. It was really weird talking about it, because it's the first time I've talked about it outside of a treatment/AA setting - but I figured they can only help me if they know the whole story. The lady was really nice about it and said that they could help come up with a story around why I was let go. She just asked if I was sober now - how long I had and was I going to meetings! and then told me she had a cousin who'se been in AA for 14 years. I'm still really worried about what I'm going to say to future employers but it felt good being honest with her. I was just so relieved that she didn't freak out or look at me like I had 5 heads or something.
