They never stop to think how some people's mother may be deceased, may have been (or still is) abusive, may be distant, etc.

The US touts individualism but seems to forget we ARE individuals. Not everyone has a life or relationships like a Hallmark commercial. Speaking of which, think how much money the greeting card and flower companies make on days like this when they tell people to get a card or gift to show how much you love mom.

I'm not close to my mother either and never have been. Not for lack of trying, but she either does not want a real relationship or doesn't know how to have one. I've given up. I'm 54 years old yet she doesn't know anything about me. And that works both ways.

We are like oil and water: They don't mix. Like oil, she's "lighter" and prefers to stay on the surface. Like water, I like to go deeper, so I sink down to the bottom (like water being the heavier of the two) while the oil floats to the top.

I'm not going to even listen to the radio all weekend since they keep reminding me about Mother's Day and telling me to go get that "perfect" gift. My mom doesn't even talk to me hardly.

yeah, same in the UK.. it's always shoved down everyone's throat, and it's always a weekend
