It's all about power and success regardless of how it was achieved with extra points for lacking scruples and having managed not to get caught. But I think it's all countries, sadly. People just tend to express their evil in different ways. In the Third World it's through corruption and dictatorships, in other countries it may be through violence against women and children and in the west it's often through racism.
My mom is a European lady and when she first got to the U.S. she was upset by the role of race in this society. It's as if an individual's race is 99% central to who he is, then comes the other 1% (you know, the irrelevant stuff like his character, he's ethics, his values, his unique temperament). But if we're born in the U.S. or have lived in the U.S. since childhood we don't tend to realize just how bad things are, because this is normal reality. But to people from countries with different costumes it can be absolutely shocking. It's like the Aztecs and their religious human sacrifice, they were fine with it because it was how their society was organized. When another population showed up (the Spanish) who didn't share their values they were appalled

Sorry for the late reply, I feel bad that I didn't get back to you any sooner, I really appreciate what you wrote up for me. The vulnerable, the poor. It's been years since I first heard the word 'the poverty eating business', that's just a rough translation from Japanese, some bad new businesses has popped up and they force the victims to pay up for the services like money lending, house rent or I don't remember what else, they make the customers cough up the money from any incomes including social security, I don't think anyone's selling their kidneys but the possibilities are there. Regular people like myself don't really know the dark side of the society, which are controlled by something like mafia types. Well, no point going on here actually, sometimes even the police force can't be relied upon so much...
Well, I have to agree with the first paragraph almost completely, the society's ill is there right where you said "lacking scruples". It's not all about power and success though. I think it comes from being in a scary vulnerable position and the survival genes or whatever in our heads tend to kick some part of the morality out of the window. The way we're going, the global warming will be getting less attentions, who knows those preppers could be right to have trained their kids with some emergency drills. Expressing evil in different ways, in their native ways, this sounds so true, doesn't it? kinda? I refuse to be dumbed down, I've had more than my share of dumbness from people, evil won't stand in our ways because we all share this one and only blue planet, let us simply live, and let live, someone twisted the world/word around in our history. Ain't that puzzling to me!
About the US immigration policy

, who am I kidding? I'm not qualified to talk about that. I just wanna mention about this documentary that I watched years ago though. It was about America, don't remember whereabout. One was about these war refugees getting their residencies in the states, it was their first time to have a look see at those modern amenities, it was a loverly thing to watch, all because of those welcoming people. Another one was about these Chinese kids being adapted by some families and how they've grown up was shown in the program. I suppose true American will never forget about ellis island and its histories, they fought from the start, didn't they? hmm...
We need space aliens visiting us to form a federation of planet! I also need a phaser so I can stun evil people hiding among us.
