I didn't go to college here either - they are very different from the system I'm used to... I'm guessing AP courses and the like can be used as prerequisites, so if you get a good enough grade in AP English you might not have to take English 101, or something like that...??
It seemed a little bizarre to me when I first came here that you would take classes unrelated to your major in college, but when you consider that American students don't have to choose their major until well after they start college, it makes sense.
