AP isn't just for prereqs - it is considered a college-level course. With a 4 or a 5 score I could replace a whole course towards graduation, and it just read as AP Art History or whatever on my transcript. It was useful for keeping me on track for graduation when I studied abroad for a year on a program that my college would not give me full credit for since they weren't affiliated.
