I don't know about the UK or elsewhere, but here August is the only month without any holidays, official or "manufactured." So, it's my favorite month even though it's hot as h e l l.
Just want to say many thanks for those who put "thanks" under my ranting post.  This confirms my theory that I can't be the only one who feels this way. I'm not alone after all and PC is my only outlet.
