It was useful for keeping me on track for graduation when I studied abroad for a year on a program that my college would not give me full credit for since they weren't affiliated.

Now it is somewhat different. "Some" universitie do it the way you and I did it, the old way, but some universities like my son's change the rules several years back. He is a National AP scholar that took 6 AP test in 2014. His particular school allowed him to skip All Freshmen level classes, and take 300-400 level glasses in English, economics, etc. He did have 3 classes from the community college that they gave him credit. If he had gone to some other schools he applied to he could have started as a sophomore.

Unfortunately, Schools change things from year to year. Some departments in certain schools will not give AP credit. This seems to be a trend in more select colleges, and prestigious departments. I believe it is all about the dollar. The more they allow classes from outside there university, the less they get.
