It's mostly about how you use your energy. Depression may be least energy-efficient, so you might spend a lot of energy. But (energy) exhaustion doesn't mean you can sleep. You might get non-affective psychosis or psychosis during depression because of exhaustion, while being unable to sleep.
Energy-efficiency doesn't mean energy-expenditure of course. You might use most energy when stable (if your mania ends because of anxiety, not exhaustion, but maybe always).

Mania kills cells. Brain cells die. Memories become more reduced conceptually, making more efficient use of limited means. Memories shape our reality. Our memories are more or less split in two by abstractions, conceptual reductions. Mood states with memories, concepts, attached. Memories of pain and those of joy. It causes instability, changeability. Fearing that will leave an emptiness between pain and joy and a greater divide.
