We didn't know anyone on our street for a long time after we moved in. Then, in the last couple of years, a few new neighbors arrived. Now we know the family next door (2 little boys & a little girl) the family across from them (5 girls), the family across from us (2 girls) and sort of know another family 2 doors down (1 boy my son's age, then 1 or 2 older girls). The kids are great friends, so it's pretty awesome to have all these built in playmates.

We also know a couple 2 doors down as acquaintances - we don't socialize much, but we know them enough that if I had a problem at home and my husband was away, I wouldn't have a problem asking for help. Our next door neighbors on our other side were really quite - kept to themselves. Then, last summer, the husband came over and asked if he could give us their phone numbers and if we would mind calling them or their daughter if we noticed anything at their house; they had to go out of town for his cancer treatment. He died about 2 months later, after on-again, off-again treatments, ER visits, ambulances, etc. I know the wife's name and enough to wave at her (if I see her outside, maybe once every 2-3 weeks), and their adult son lives with her. I wouldn't approach them for help, though, and even have a hard time remembering her name. Sad situation all around; the husband clearly did the majority of the work around the house/yard, and the son doesn't appear to either know how or care to do it - I can't tell which.
