We live in a pretty quiet neighborhood and we know most of the people around us because many of our kids are around the same age and used to play together when they were younger. We have a police officer behind us; his daughter and my son are the same age and carpool to school and choir events. Our next door neighbor is a landscaper and does our yard for us for a really nice rate; he's awesome. Several older couples on the street we chat with when we're out walking the dogs. A teacher I work with lives about 4 doors down the street. We like our community.

We've always know at least a few of our neighbors wherever we've lived -- having kids does that for you.
