Hi Jessica -- All the info here is good. Do as much research as you have time to do.

If you do not have a knowledgable man to help you (and I generally seem to wind up with the poets who know even less than I do -- in fact, I generally know more, thanks to experience and research) -- you may be able to get a mechanic to do a check for a fee. This will allow you to find out about things that are not apparent, like the oil leak -- brakes that are worn and may need replacement in a few months, rebuilt engine (had a friend who got a car with a rebuilt and it blew in a few months, leaving her with no car and no money to get another), etc.
