I often ask myself that, but then I realize that it's no lack of intelligence on my part-- it's easy to know the things that you are 'supposed' to do, but it doesn't mean you are always ready or able to put those things into action. Also, the unsconscious does not operate on intelligence-- when you are ready, things will happen.
I don't know specifically what degree you are referring to, but my T told me something very valuable once when I was talking about something similar to what you asked here... I am a grad student of clinical psych and he told me, "Remember-- you are not your own patient and just because you are in this field does not give you any more or less control than anyone else has of their emotions." It was a very powerful statement for me to hear.
