I would probably look up the traffic if I were waiting for someone and I knew they had run into traffic - not to check up on them but just to get an idea of how long their delay might be. Traffic is so common a problem that I couldn't imagine someone really doubting it as a reason for being late, particularly when you were being so conscientious in ringing him to say you were worried you would be late.
