I think your willingness to go to the BBQ overrides your tattoos or whatever else you feel might be holding you back. It is lovely and admirable you want to get to know your workmates. Go and enjoy but you could take a lightweight sweater with you so that if you get suddenly shy, you could make a last-minute decision to hide the tattoos. That way you've got all bases covered :-))
