I was married for 20 years, had one daughter with the ex. A divorced substitute teacher told me today that I would be entitled to a portion of my ex's social security benefits when he starts receiving them. Since I allowed him to write the divorce himself, not touching any of his investments or retirement, I am wondering if I also relinquished any rights to Social Security as well. The lawmaster who presided over the divorce agreement even questioned me about the amount I was relinquishing to him, and I just sheepishly agreed and signed the papers, so happy to finally be free.
The substitute teacher today says it's the "law" that I receive a portion of his SS benefits, but I'm not sure. Anyone else here know about this?
