I think you pretty much have to name them based on their personalities, though. Although a friend who just rescued a dog from the shelter named him Chance, which kind of makes sense -- it was just by chance she found another black lab like the one her ex got in the breakup (that jerk ). Any circumstances like that you could come up with a name from?
