I also utilize my phone calendar like you.
I set up a "meeting" on my phone to write down notes and remind me of things. For example, let's say I need to remember to pay my monthly car bill. Then I make a meeting called "pay car bill" and set it for the date/time I want. Then I change the calendar settings on my phone to send an "alert" every time my "meeting" comes up. You can also tell your phone to send an alert every day for X days before the meeting starts, which I do sometimes.
