here in my location we have many different kinds of alters...
those that are there from a very young age due to extreme trauma (my locations mental health statistics show the age alters are created in young children is before the age of 5) these kinds of alters either stay stuck in the moment\ time bracket as the trauma or they have the ability to evolve. they are trigger related meaning anytime they or their body born (person they reside with in, biological body) dissociates they take control to handle what ever was the trigger that caused the dissociation. they affect every aspect of a persons life and have their own sense of agency.
then we have the kinds of alters known as introjects, medication induced, psychosis type and many others. these type of alters are not dependent upon abuse factors, they can be but its not necessary to be abused to have these types of alters, they happen with any mental and physical health problems not just dissociative disorders. this kind of alters can happen at any point and more can come into being\ be created at any point in a persons life not just during very early childhood.
example one time I was in a very challenging job and i had a boss that repeatedly put me down. this resulted in my unconscious mind to create an introject alter that I had never had, this introject alters sense of agency was to take on the characteristics of my emotionally abusive boss. this alter disappeared when I no longer believed whole heartedly that I deserved that emotional abuse. I no longer bought in to what that alter was saying to me. and countered that alters sense of agency with my more positive views of my body and self.
sometimes people have a way of knowing their alters are there and sometimes people find out slowly that their alters are there, sometimes alters dont always disclose they are there in a timely manner. some people do not realize their alters are taking control all their lives until the alter decides to share that information. so sometimes it seams like a persons brain is creating more and more alters when those alters were there all along they just did not let their presence be known...
gosh there are so many reasons why a person may have or may seem to have may seem to be creating more and more alters. the key to making it stop is to get to the root cause as to why a persons internal system needs to keep creating more and more alters. only that person that this is happening to can answer that question and how to stop their self from doing that.
my suggestion is to talk with your treatment providers, they will explain to you why you have a system where alters continue to be created, what types of alters they are and how to best stop your mind from doing this.
