Everybody dissociates at one time or another. Dissociation is also a symptom of many other mental illnesses. When dissociation disrupts a person's life, then it becomes a disorder.

Dissociation is a triggered response where ones mind goes into a daze- when one can't mentally deal with the present situation. When I dissociate, I become nonfunctioning and so talking and thinking isn't my thing.

For instance, I've hardly no people skills and can't handle human contact. If a person was to walk up and talk to me, I'd dissociate and immediately go into a daze- pretty much shutting down into a trance. Being a multiple, I have Others like Steve, Karen, or Others whose job is to communicate with humans that will quickly step up to keep up the illusion of normalcy and carry on the conversation, for "me" to only return when it was my turn to get back to work, like when the convo is over.

I believe most who ask here are worried that they might have an "alter" talking out because not being in control of ones own body is a very fearful thing for us humans, after all, it's our body. DID is a since babyhood condition brought on by trauma such as abuse that the mind couldn't process which is only discoverable through therapy.

Its human to say something without thinking like through distraction, blurting something out, or double taking on a thought, emotion or action. Though, the lines can somewhat get blurred.
