The United States of America is the greatest country on earth due to its diversity. Out of many we are one.
Separation is not only inherently unequal, but creates stigma. Thus the idea of putting everyone with mental illness into a certain geographical area will only increase stigma. When a person who does not have a mental illness knows a person who does have a mental illness, stigma is reduced. Furthermore, this idea doesn't account for stigma within the mentally ill community. Moreover, segregating people with mental illness is not only morally wrong, but, as I said, will increase stigma of people with mental illness.
This thesis can be used with other demographics. There is still systemic racism in America, but I don't believe the way to reduce stigma of black people is to segregate everyone who is black into a certain geographical area. This will not end racism, but increase it. And, just like with people with mental illness, it would be inherently unequal, morally wrong, and counterproductive.
You don't end stigma by segregation.
Out of many we are one.
