Dear Darkeyes and others having hypothyroid or being concerned they might have thyroid problems. Thyroid runs rampant in my maternal family so I have as a rule had my thyroid tested about every 2 years. Severe depression and sleepiness have been my problem since I was about 5. Last month my mom who suffers hypo found a new doc who did a bunch of lab tests with not great results. Lotsa questions for my mom. I am semi medically intelligent about some stuff so she asked me to research on the web what this all meant. I was more than willing to take it on. After a straight 24 hrs online I found some interesting stuff. Mainly T3 or triiodothyronine the thyroid hormone that is actively used in the body has been effectively used to augment anti depresants esp. in treatment resistant depression. I'm thinking I can use this. Also and very sadly I discovered that countless #s of people suffer but go untreated because of normal TSH ranges. Also it is a known fact from all the sights I read that a good # of hypos recieving Synthroid or only some form of T4 which is what the body converts into T3 have unacceptable reduction in symptoms .Even when on synthroid and TSH is in "normal" range many people very poorly convert the T4 into the needed and active T3. Basically all the T4 in the form of synthroid etc. stays as T4 and does nothing. When T3 is added to the T4 usually symptoms start to minimize. The issue with giving T3 that I read was based on a once daily dose which was shown to cause severe peaks and valleys in hormone levels throughout the day causing hypothyroid then hyperthyroid. The doc discussing this quite frankly stated an obvious 2 smaller doses a day would reduce if not remove that problem all together. There are also products that are made from bovine thyroind glands that contain both natural T3 and T4 plus other good things. These are federally regulated scripts The most memorable to me was "Armour". Just like the meat! You can get more info just by typing Armour thyroid on any search engine. I don't know for sure since I am not an endocrinologist. I hope some or all of this info has at least got you thinking about searching for yourselves. It was very educational and fun. I can't emphasize enough I am not a doctor. I implore you to research and only consult a liscenced Doctor preferrably an Endocrinologist. I pray this helps and you all find the relief you all deserve.
