with regards to whether he's genuine about his life or not, it's not entirely off. at 30 yrs old one could have been in the military since you can be 18 afaik, to join, I know my brother joined, did his one term in the military and got out well before 30.
The retired part, is kind of strange tho. retiring early is not uncommon but at 30 yrs old, having spent his time in the military and such it seems unlikely that he's extremely well off enough to be retired.
it's been a week and he's clinging to you, that is too much and you should just walk away from this one.
