Your psychiatrist sounds weird.
Little need for sleep is just ONE of the seven criteria for hypo/mania. You only need to meet 4 of those criteria in order to be considered hypo/manic. (Then the severity of your symptoms or the presence of psychosis will determine if you're hypo or manic.)
I've never slept a normal amount when hypo/manic, though. It's always 6 hours of sleep or less, but it averages about 3-4 hours of sleep a night... and I don't feel tired. My eyes will hurt like hell, though. They'll get all sore and stuff.
