Usually they only admit if you're psychotic. Is there a community MH team? You can get referred to one by your GP. How about contacting some of the agencies that run hostels, like Shelter? There are charities too, like MIND, they have local offices. If you can, I'd spend a day in your local library finding out about all the support you're entitled to. Hope you settle down.
