It sounds like your friend has a very young baby so she will be exhausted in her own right. Her reluctance may be that she feels life is too demanding to her (rather than you).
I agree finding alternative transportation (money permitting) is a good idea, maybe drive to the public transport then use that to get to the appointment, (which could cost less) or alternatively, allow time to drive the journey in stages with a time of rest between so you're not driving too far in one go.
Remember your insurance may not be valid if you go against doctors advice.
My ability to drive is limited and on the best day I can manage 10 to 15 minutes. I had to go and collect a friend for an appointment today and my driving limit was 10 minutes, the distance to her flat, (quite good for me), and I made sure I had a rest and a drink at her place before trying the second leg from hers to the doctor.
