I took Ativan for short period of time because I was taking Serzone and you can't take Serzone and Xanax-- so the Dr. switched me to Ativan. I cannot say that I experienced what you are describing. Between Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin I have not experienced any side effects. I am concerned that you told your doctor about this, she said it shouldn't happen, yet you are still taking it? Did she tell you to stop taking it? There are plenty of other Benzodiazepines that can help to reduce your anxiety.
